Getting a new journal and leaving all of the communities I belong to. It's been a fun ride. I'll have details up in my current journal within a few days about the new journal if you want to add me.

My brother just brought something to my attention that he wants me to put in. our Family motto. "Who was the fool? who was the wiseman ,beggar, or King? Whether rich or poor, all's the same in Death." - just a little more glimpse into my life.

Conversation between my friend Sarah and her brother, Jack [18 Jun 2005|08:47pm]

liketheitrules
(Names Changed)
Sarah: Jack, should I take the Mercedes or the Lexus?
Jack: The Mercedes.
Sarah: But it's been running kind of strange lately. I think I'll take the Lexus.
Jack: Sarah, take the Mercedes.
Sarah: But I want to take the Lexus!
Jack: Sarah, mom will KILL you if you take the Lexus!
Sarah: But I don't like the Mercedes!
Jack: (puts hands up in frustration) FINE! Take the Lexus!

That's when you know your friends are rich.

Elitist but true statements! [06 Jun 2005|10:45pm]

liketheitrules
Most of us are rich or at least upper middle class, but those of us that with money and those of us who struggle a little more to get by all have one thing in common: our elitist attitudes about pop culture, food, travel, school, etc.! Which is I why I present to you a fun little game called
Elitist but true!
in which each member, if they so chose, may post three stereotypically elitist viewpoints that they hold that are, despite their patrician nature, true, dammit!

My contribution:

1) The shirts from old navy are going to fall apart in the wash. You might as well just go to target, where the clothes are inexpensive, but hey, at least they have that Isaac Mizrahi guy brightening things up! In other words, if you're going to slum, then go all out! This is known as reverse elitism.
2) Perrier tastes like shit, but I've been known to order it anyway.
3) If the movie isn't playing in some arthouse indie theater, it probably isn't that good. Hipster elitism!

Let me just ask: ARE YOU GUYS SERIOUS!? The “Upper Crust”? I am appalled. As a current student a prestigious college preparatory school in Redmond, Wa (yes, the home of Microsoft) and matriculating at Yale University this fall, I must say that I am quite disgusted at the fact that you have created this abhorrent club. It is pure ignorance. I must say, although there arn't all that many of you, I still am completely perplexed at the motives behind this endevor. Let me ask you this, as I am extremely curious: why do you all find it important to create a body of elitists? Why do you think that you have gotten to the places that you have all gotten? Was it your parents? How did you receive your intellect? I assure you that most of the basis of your “greatness” is sheer luck by birth: good schools, fancy vacations, clubs, living abroad, music lessons, etc., etc. is all a product of money, which none of you has worked for yourselves, or so it seems by your “applications.” For those of you who haven't had such prolific wealth, you try to make it seem like you have. I am not saying that any of this is bad, or that you have not worked. What I am saying, is that you are separating yourselves from the great majority, isolating and stratifying one world from the other, which is a great problem among our society. I think the real question is this: would you admit a single-mother of three working two low-paying jobs and cannot afford or take the time to get a better education? Would you admit a migrant worker who has had no access to education and has not been given the knowledge or the power to find themselves out of the situation that they are in? Tell me, please, why are you better? And now that you have this club, what exactly are you going to do to allow others to have the experiences and privileges that you’ve had? (And if you say that they do not deserve it, why exactly don’t they deserve the same experiences and privileges that you have had?) How are you, the “upper crust,” going to change the world so that you raise all of those who have worked equally as hard as you, and are as deserving, to the level that you are at? You are no more special, you have just been lucky. Again, I sincerely regret that there are people such as yourselves that are so uncompassionate towards others. I feel ashamed to be associated with such superiority, snobbery, and frank egoism. You perpetuate inequality and are the cause of social injustice. And really, you’re applications aren’t all that impressive. Stop trying to impress one another.
Lauren

my application [17 Apr 2005|10:51am]

liketheitrules
*-NAME: Iris
*-PHOTO: ask for one later
*-COMPLETE BIRTHDATE: November 4th, 1987
*-HOMETOWN: Loudonville, NY
*-EDUCATION: Morrey Elementary School (Stroudsburg, PA), Baraillon Elementary School (Tassin-La-Demi Lune, France), Loudonville Elementary (Loudonville, NY), Shaker Junior High School (Latham, NY), Shaker High School (Latham, NY), McGill University(Montreal, Quebec) (well, not yet, as I haven't graduated high school yet...but I WILL go there)
*-INTERESTS: walking (it's good excersize, though I often get teased by my classmates who drive), poetry, writing, acting, being with friends, Bands like: the honorary title, the living end, bands from the sixties artists like: Jeff Buckley, Bob Dylan, Rufus Wainwright, Jack Johnson, Al Green. I enjoy chilling with the Speech and Debate nerds. I like cities. I like coffee. I like hanging out with the friday night crew, driving around in my friend's SUV hitting up starbucks, walking around at night, eating at diners, etc...
-SOME SPECIAL AWARDS/HONORS YOU HAVE RECEIVED: National Honor Society, Honor Roll, gold medal/state finalist for trip to Russia in New York State Russian Olympiada 2004, Speech and Debate leadership award, third place trophies in speech and debate in the category of Varsity Oral Interpretation, silver and bronze medals in Russian olympiadas in 2003 and 2005, gold medal in the Russian essay competition--essay will be judged in Moscow, published in school literary magazine and school newspaper, silver medals in national latin exam, there are probably other awards I'm not remembering
WHY YOU WOULD BE A GOOD FIT: Well I don't APPEAR to be stuck up or elitist...in fact most of my clothes are hand me downs from friends because I recently lost weight. The rest of my clothes I get at TJ Maxx. I'm eccentric and geeky. So if you looked at me you wouldn't think I was an elitist.
However, I do take latin, I do speech and debate. I was given the choice of going to state schools or McGill, and I jumped at McGill, no question about it. I have lived in France, and have been to the following European countries: France, Spain, Italy, England, Russia, Germany, Belgium, The Netherlands, Switzerland, Luxembourg. I adore cities. I have talked loudly about applying to Vassar while sitting in a Mercedes Benz dealership as my friend got her SUV fixed. I could technically qualify for Daughters of the American Revolution because I'm related to Nathan Hale. I read the NY Times Style section. I didn't qualify for financial aid. These are facts about me that I can manipulate to my chosing, making me seem upper crust.
At the same time, I'm not entirely like you guys. I'm a democrat! One of my favorite times last year was going to this hardcore show called "bands against bush." I adore the dollar store and goodwill. I get most of my CDs from the library. I don't drive or have a cell phone. And the only stable source of income in my house is my mom's teacher's salary, though my dad does own his own business...it's just not stable. So...those are facts about me that one could manipulate in the other direction. Just putting it all out there.

and of course, i've had the stereotypical upbringing. ive gone through 3 nannies, always attended private school, and vacationed (i hate the word summered) on the vineyard. plus, you guys seem cool, so i thought id give it a shot.

NAME: Hannah
PHOTO: ask me for this later, I'll put one of my senior pictures on my dad's computer. this one doesn't have a scanner. My user photo is me when i was 3 if that helps :)
BIRTHDATE: 8/20/87
HOMETOWN: Lincoln, NE (woo hoo, right?)
EDUCATION: The school district I live in is actually like...in the top 10 in the country, so my parents sent me to the public schools. I attended Clare McPhee Elementary School, Irving Middle School, and Lincoln Southeast High School. I'll be attending Nebraska Wesleyan University next year as a political science major.
INTERESTS: I LOVE playing tennis, cooking, photography, enjoying music both by listening to it and playing it. I also enjoy literature and films, both domestic and foreign, studio and independent. Yesterday I saw "Un Long Dimanche de Francailles" and it was amazing.
SOME SPECIAL AWARDS/HONORS YOU HAVE RECEIVED: I attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on Law and Nebraska Girls State. Like everyone else, I'm on Honor Roll and National Honor Society, and I'm involved with various clubs and Student Council at my school.
WHY YOU WOULD BE A GOOD FIT (just a few sentences): I'm no snob, but I definitely enjoy the finer things in life, living in an upscale old neighborhood, belonging to a country club, and being as classy a person as possible. When I say classy, I'm not necessarily just referring to fashion. To me, being classy is being friendly, polite, and tactful.

Well I have been co-mod status here, so I've taken a little initiative in getting the community up and running again. Many earlier members have been approved by the moderator, however there were some newer applications that I just approved. Those people should have received an approval comment/banner. If you have not received word of your approval or lack there of please comment on this entry. I will read your applications and get back to you as soon as possible. Also I would like to delete any members no longer interested in being part of this community. In order to do this I ask all members to also comment of this entry with a simple yes or no. Yes if you would like to continue as a member of this community, and no if you no longer wish to belong. I would like to have all replies within a week, this would mean I hope to have all members in order by February 10. I will make a decent attempt to track members who have no replied down, however I am not going to go out of my way to do so. Thank you in advance for your cooperation. I hope that this community will soon again be the wonderful gathering place for those of upper crust status that it was created to be.
